Aric Klar, founder of the independent toy chain Toyology Toys, opens a recreational marijuana dispensary in Hamtramck this week under his Quality Roots brand. The entrepreneur applies lessons from building multiple Metro Detroit toy stores since 2011 to create a premium cannabis retail experience. This move arrives amid lingering community skepticism toward dispensaries in the city.
From Toys to Cannabis: A Shared Retail Philosophy
Klar launched Toyology Toys with its first West Bloomfield location in 2011, expanding to several sites across Metro Detroit. He now grows Quality Roots, starting with a Battle Creek dispensary and moving into the region. "We pride ourselves, just like in our toy business, on our selection of goods. Not just in providing a variety of products but in providing the right variety," Klar says. His approach emphasizes curated offerings over sheer volume, a strategy that bridges disparate product categories through consistent customer focus.
Hamtramck's Evolving Stance on Dispensaries
Hamtramck permits retail cannabis dispensaries because the city never passed an ordinance to ban them after recreational marijuana became legal in Michigan. The first such business opened in November 2020 and faced immediate backlash, with local media reporting widespread community unease. Quality Roots plans to open at 2024 Caniff St. on Thursday, Jan. 7, entering this cautious environment. Legal allowance does not guarantee acceptance, as residents voice concerns over normalization, traffic, and youth exposure in a densely populated area with strong cultural and religious influences.
Earning Trust in a Divided Community
Klar acknowledges the challenge. "We’re excited to show Hamtramck and the surrounding communities the value of having this kind of retail in the city. We’ll be working daily to earn everybody’s trust so that we can become a household name," he says. "It all comes in time. It’s not going to happen overnight." This expansion reflects broader trends in Michigan's cannabis industry, where operators diversify from established retail to capture a market projected to mature amid regulatory stability. Success hinges on demonstrating responsible operations, from product education to community engagement, to counter initial resistance.
